When my son found himself in the midst of one of his worst ever allergy attacks, I suggested we hum to the tune of God Bless America, together. And, very much to our surprise in doing so, he began to feel better!
Of course, I was humming to songs like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, while he was trying to get through some very complicated renditions, one of which I mistakenly thought to be Bohemian Rhapsody.
Mama Mia… Mama Mia....
Hmm-hmm Hmm-hmm... Hmm-hmm Hmm-hmm...
In either case, humming brought him some relief and certainly left us giggling, ending our night on a much happier "note" then when we started. (Did you catch the play on words?)
Research states humming causes soundwaves to bounce things around in your sinus cavity. This may even shake things up enough to clear out some mucus and create airflow. Great to know in situations where immediate help is needed, and other options are not readily available.
So, the next time you find yourself with a stuffy nose, you can "breathe easier" in knowing that besides putting a smile on your face, humming your favorite tune quite possibly might even bring relief!
